  1. Review Third-Party App Access: Regularly review the third-party apps and websites you've granted access to your Instagram account. Revoke access for any apps you no longer use or don't recognize. You can do this in your Instagram settings under "Apps and Websites."
  2. Keep Your Devices Secure and Updated: Install a reputable antivirus and anti-malware program on your phone and computer, and keep your operating systems and apps up to date with the latest security patches.
  3. Log Out on Shared Devices: If you log in to Instagram on a shared computer or phone, always remember to log out completely when you're finished. Avoid checking "Remember me" on public devices.
  4. Monitor Login Activity: Regularly check your Instagram "Login Activity" (usually found in the security settings) to see if there are any logins from unfamiliar locations or devices. If you see anything suspicious, log out all sessions and change your password immediately.
  5. Generate New Backup Codes: If you suspect your account has been compromised, generate a new set of backup codes for your 2FA and store them securely offline.
If you believe your account has been compromised, you should:
  • Immediately change your Instagram password.
  • Review your connected devices and log out any unknown ones.
  • Check your linked email and phone number to ensure they haven't been changed by someone else.
  • Review your recent activity for any unauthorized posts, messages, or profile changes.
  • Report the issue to Instagram's support team through their help center.
It's unsettling to experience a potential security breach, especially when you've taken precautions like enabling 2FA. By understanding how session hijacking works and implementing strong security practices, you can significantly reduce the risk of it happening again. Stay vigilant and keep your account security settings up to date.
