There is a type of warranty for some Microsoft surface called KYOD.
It stands for Keep your own device. According to my research, it allows the customer to keep their own device in some cases.
One applicable case is Battery Damage. Bloated battery for example. There might be more cases where this is applicable, I will edit this thread with more cases if I find more.
Now to the method:
1. Get yourself a KYOD serial number. These might be hard to find but you can have a look in my sig or PM me if you can't find any.
2. Contact the support via Chat, Email or Phone. I recommend going for phone support. Try to find the business support line, as the KYOD warranty is for business products. Use the Battery Damage excuse as the issue. Try to act scared/concerned about the battery, push them if they play around to much.
3. They might ask for pics and/or receipt. Get yourself a Photoshop guy that can help you with the picture/receipt.
4. Enjoy your new surface, without AR or Boxing :)
