Real talk. You pay $20 a month for ChatGPT. You pay another $20 for Claude. That is $40/mo, $480 a year, for maybe an hour of use a day. At API pay per use rates a normal user burns $2 to $4 a month for the SAME models. Here is the exact setup. It is legit, it does not break in a month, and you get every model in one interface.
Why the subscription is a bad deal for most people:
A subscription is a flat $20 no matter what. The API bills you per token (per word, roughly). Unless you are hammering it all day, you are paying for capacity you never touch. Current July 2026 API rates per million tokens:
- GPT-5.4: about $2.50 in / $15 out
- Claude Sonnet: about $3 in / $15 out
- Claude Haiku (fast/cheap): about $1 in / $5 out
A million tokens is roughly 750,000 words. A heavy chat day is maybe 20k to 50k tokens. Do the math: normal use lands at a few bucks a month, not twenty.
The setup (30 minutes, one time):
1. Get API keys. Make an account on the OpenAI platform and the Anthropic (Claude) platform, add a small prepaid balance like $5 to each. Prepaid means you physically cannot overspend.
2. Pick a frontend that holds all models in one window:
- Open WebUI: clean, self hosted, runs in Docker with one command. Best if you have any home server or a cheap VPS.
- LibreChat: same idea, supports OpenAI, Anthropic and more side by side, plus presets.
- If you do not want to host anything, a local desktop client that takes API keys works too.
3. Drop your keys into the frontend. Now you have GPT and Claude in one chat, switchable per message.
4. Turn on the cost savers that subscriptions never give you:
- Use Haiku or a mini model for quick junk, save the expensive model for real work. This alone cuts your bill in half.
- Prompt caching gives up to about 90% off repeated context. If you reuse a big system prompt, you barely pay for it after the first call.
- Batch mode is about 50% cheaper for anything that is not real time.
The receipts:
Put $5 on each platform. For a lot of you that $10 lasts two to three months of daily use. Compare to $40/mo on two subscriptions. That is the hack: same models, fraction of the price, all legit, no trial timer ticking, no account risk.
Where it is NOT for you:
If you genuinely hammer AI all day every day (heavy coding agents, thousands of messages), a subscription can be cheaper. Know your usage. This thread is for the 90% who overpay.
